The Humber Bridge, which connects the East Riding of Yorkshire with North Lincolnshire, is one of the UK’s most recognisable landmarks, carrying more than ten million vehicles every year.
The challenge
Humber Bridge was undergoing a major digital transformation, working with a specialist toll contractor to replace its toll payment system and develop a new payment app.
On the previous platform, the toll system and website differed in style, navigation, and usability, leading to a disjointed user experience. Humber Bridge wanted to create a consistent experience across all digital touchpoints and to foreground the bridge’s dual roles as both transport link and visitor attraction.
The solution
Castlegate joined the multi-stakeholder project as the Humber Bridge’s website partner. We connected the website with the new toll payment system and consulted with the digital agency on accessibility to help them meet their compliance requirements.
We enhanced existing functionality with a bespoke plugin that integrates real-time weather data, including wind speed and visibility, with live traffic status, and configured it to ensure reliability even under high volumes of website traffic. We implemented smart routing for contact enquiries to automatically direct messages to the appropriate system.
To underline the bridge’s role in the community, the new design includes pages dedicated to its history, wildlife, and facilities, positioning the Humber Bridge as an active part of the region’s identity.
