Websites for industry, retail and public sector organisations

Organisations working in industry, retail, and the public sector often manage large, technical, or highly variable datasets, whether that’s machinery specifications, product catalogues, or live operational information. Turning that complexity into something customers, partners, or members of the public can search, filter, and act on quickly is rarely straightforward, particularly when the audience ranges from specialists to first-time visitors.

Castlegate has recently worked with four organisations tackling this challenge from different perspectives: plant hire, online retail, national infrastructure, and chemical manufacturing. Below, we look at the websites we built for Fairfax Plant Hire, Shifta, Humber Bridge, and Renaissance Chemicals, showing how bespoke development can simplify complex information without compromising functionality.

Fairfax Plant Hire

A £30 million investment in new machinery had transformed Fairfax’s fleet, but its website told a different story: outdated, difficult to navigate, and unable to reflect the true scale of the business. With more than 2,000 machines to manage, customers and staff alike were struggling to find accurate specifications.

We built a search tool that allows customers to filter machinery by measurements such as height, reach, and dig depth, with every product page supported by downloadable specification sheets and manuals. A shortlist feature enables customers to collect multiple machines and request a quotation in a single enquiry, while case studies and testimonials reinforce Fairfax’s reputation as an established supplier.

The result is a website that makes a large and technically detailed fleet significantly easier to explore while supporting customers throughout the enquiry process.

Shifta

Shifta approached Castlegate before launch with an ambitious idea: a second-hand bicycle marketplace that could appeal to enthusiasts and casual buyers alike, cope with significant demand from day one, and use gamification to encourage repeat engagement.

We built a multi-vendor marketplace allowing individuals and retailers to sell alongside one another, supporting both auctions and instant purchases across more than 100 filterable product attributes. Buyers and sellers earn points for everyday activities such as logging in or listing items, which can then be entered into prize draws. We also developed Shifta’s colour palette into a stronger visual identity that balances disruptive energy with commercial credibility.

The result is a scalable marketplace designed to encourage repeat engagement while providing buyers and sellers with a flexible platform that can grow alongside the business.

Humber Bridge

As one of the UK’s best-known landmarks, the Humber Bridge was introducing a new toll payment system and mobile app, but its website felt disconnected from these wider digital services. The bridge’s dual role as both critical transport infrastructure and a visitor destination was also not being communicated effectively.

Working alongside the bridge’s other technical partners, we connected the website to the new toll system and developed a bespoke plugin combining live weather and traffic information, designed to remain reliable during periods of high demand. Smart routing directs enquiries to the appropriate team automatically, while new content covering the bridge’s history, wildlife, and visitor facilities reflects its wider importance to the region.

The result is a website that supports day-to-day operations while presenting the Humber Bridge as both essential infrastructure and an important regional destination.

Renaissance Chemicals

This long-established manufacturer produces a highly technical range of scientific stains, fluorescent compounds, and industrial dyes, many identified by CAS and EC numbers rather than familiar product names. Making that catalogue straightforward to navigate for laboratories and industrial buyers around the world, while showcasing an international distributor network, required far more than a conventional product catalogue.

We built a filterable catalogue organised by sector and category, allowing technical buyers to move efficiently from broad browsing to individual compounds. An interactive distributor directory helps customers identify their nearest supplier anywhere in the world, while new content highlights Renaissance Chemicals’ environmental initiatives, including renewable energy generation and reforestation projects.

The result is a website that makes a highly specialised product range easier to explore while strengthening the company’s international presence and technical credibility.
