What is agentic commerce, and what does it mean for WooCommerce?

For the last few years, much of the discussion around AI and ecommerce has focused on helping people find products. Someone might ask ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI service to recommend a waterproof jacket, find a suitable birthday present or compare three different coffee machines.

The next stage is already taking shape. Instead of simply recommending what to buy, AI systems are beginning to help people buy it. This is generally known as agentic commerce, and it represents an important change in how products can be discovered, compared and purchased online.

The major AI, ecommerce and payment companies are already building the infrastructure required to support it. If you run a WooCommerce website, you don’t need to become an expert in the technical standards behind this technology, but you do need to understand what is changing and make sure your online shop is ready for it.

What is agentic commerce?

Imagine you want to buy a birthday present for someone who enjoys gardening. Traditionally, you might search Google, visit several websites, compare products, check prices and delivery times, choose something and complete the checkout yourself.

With agentic commerce, you can increasingly start that process by telling an AI assistant something like: “Find me a good present for someone who loves gardening. My budget is £50 and I need it delivered by Friday.”

The AI can search for suitable products, compare the available options and make recommendations. The development now underway takes this further, allowing authorised AI agents to interact with ecommerce and payment systems and participate directly in the transaction.

This is no longer simply a prediction about the future. OpenAI and Stripe have developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol to support commerce through AI services, Shopify and Google have developed the Universal Commerce Protocol, and WooCommerce is actively developing support for AI agents and agentic commerce.

The individual standards will continue to evolve, but the direction is clear: AI is moving from helping people decide what to buy towards taking part in the buying process itself.

Why does agentic commerce matter to online retailers?

One of the most important implications is that a customer no longer needs to begin their shopping journey on your website. They can begin by talking to an AI assistant and asking it to find the right product.

That changes the role of the ecommerce website. Your shop still needs to work extremely well for human visitors, but increasingly it also needs to make sense to automated systems acting on their behalf.

There are two parts to this. First, an AI system needs to find, understand and accurately represent your products. Second, as agentic commerce develops, ecommerce platforms need secure ways of allowing authorised AI systems to interact with products, orders, payments and other store functionality.

The first is important now. The second is rapidly being built.

Can AI understand what you sell?

Before an AI system can recommend your product, it needs reliable information about it: what it is, what it costs, whether it is available, its important characteristics, its variations and who it is suitable for.

This is why AI search optimisation and agentic commerce are closely connected.

A well-structured ecommerce website makes products easier for search engines and AI systems to understand. Product names and descriptions need to be clear, important information needs to be accessible, and appropriate structured data helps machines identify information such as price, availability and product characteristics.

For ecommerce businesses, product information is therefore no longer written solely for people browsing the website. It increasingly needs to be machine-readable as well.

This has a straightforward commercial implication. If an AI system cannot reliably understand your products, they are less likely to form part of an AI-assisted shopping journey.

Before an AI agent can buy your product, it needs to find it, understand it and establish that it is relevant to the person asking.

What does agentic commerce mean for WooCommerce?

This is where developments become particularly interesting for WooCommerce store owners.

WooCommerce is actively working on agentic commerce and collaborating with companies including Stripe. Stripe has named WooCommerce as a launch partner for its Agentic Commerce Suite, designed to help merchants make their catalogues available through multiple AI shopping services.

WooCommerce is also developing ways for authorised AI systems to interact with stores. Specific capabilities can be defined so that an authorised system can perform a particular task without simply being given unrestricted access to the entire WordPress administration area.

There is a lot of technical terminology associated with this, including ACP, UCP and MCP. Unless you’re developing these systems, the distinctions aren’t particularly important. What matters is that AI companies, payment providers and ecommerce platforms are establishing common ways for AI agents and online shops to communicate with one another.

Some of the underlying technology is still developing. WooCommerce currently describes its MCP functionality as a developer preview, so this does not mean every WooCommerce store is already equipped for autonomous AI purchasing.

It does mean that WooCommerce is actively preparing for agentic commerce, and its open, extensible architecture puts it in a strong position as these technologies mature.

Does this mean people will stop visiting ecommerce websites?

No. Agentic commerce shouldn’t be interpreted as the end of the ecommerce website.

People will continue to browse, explore brands, look at photographs, read detailed information and make purchasing decisions themselves. For many products, the experience of choosing is an important part of buying.

A better way to think about agentic commerce is as a new route to the customer.

Online retailers already reach customers through their own websites, conventional search, Google Shopping, social media and marketplaces. AI assistants are becoming another discovery channel and are now developing into a transactional channel as well.

We don’t yet know how large that channel will become or how quickly customer behaviour will change. But there is now enough activity from major AI, ecommerce and payment companies that retailers should be preparing for it rather than waiting to see whether it happens.

What should WooCommerce store owners do now?

The answer isn’t to install the latest plugin promising to make your shop “AI ready”. The technology is moving quickly, standards are still developing and some newer tools haven’t been around long enough to establish their reliability.

The sensible starting point is the underlying ecommerce website.

Make sure your product information is accurate, comprehensive and well structured. Check that important product information is accessible to legitimate search engines and AI systems. Implement appropriate product structured data, keep prices and availability accurate, and make sure the website itself is fast, reliable and properly maintained.

You should also start examining how your products appear in AI search. Ask several AI services the kinds of questions your customers ask. Which businesses and products are recommended? Do yours appear? Is the information accurate? If competitors are being recommended instead, what information are those sites providing that yours isn’t?

These aren’t speculative preparations for some distant version of ecommerce. AI-assisted product discovery is already happening. Getting the fundamentals right now improves your position for AI search today and provides the foundation for agentic purchasing as it develops.

What happens next?

Agentic commerce is still at an early stage, but it has moved beyond being simply an idea. The infrastructure is being built, ecommerce platforms are adapting and payment providers are creating ways for AI agents to participate securely in transactions.

There will undoubtedly be changes along the way. Standards will evolve, some technologies will succeed and others may disappear. Nobody can reliably predict how quickly consumers will adopt AI agents for everyday purchasing.

But the broader transition is already visible. AI is moving from answering questions to taking actions, and for ecommerce that changes the question from:

“Can an AI system find and recommend my products?”

to:

“Can an AI system buy my products on behalf of a customer?”

For WooCommerce store owners, preparing for the second starts with getting the first right.

If AI can’t find and understand what you sell, the checkout technology won’t matter.

How Castlegate IT can help

At Castlegate IT, we’ve worked with WordPress and WooCommerce for many years, developing ecommerce websites ranging from straightforward online shops to complex platforms involving bespoke product data, integrations and purchasing processes.

We’re now applying that experience to AI search and agentic commerce. We can assess how effectively AI systems can discover and understand your products, identify weaknesses in product content and structured data, and make sure the underlying WooCommerce website provides a sound technical foundation for the agentic capabilities now being developed.

Our approach is deliberately practical. We don’t recommend adopting technology simply because it has AI attached to it, and we don’t think retailers need to chase every new protocol or plugin.

But we equally don’t think agentic commerce should be dismissed as something to worry about in a few years’ time.

The technology is being built now. The sensible approach is to make sure your ecommerce website is ready to take advantage of it.

FAQs

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is the use of AI agents to participate actively in online shopping. An AI system can help a customer find and compare products and, increasingly, interact with ecommerce and payment systems to help complete a purchase. It represents the progression of AI from recommending what somebody should buy towards taking action on their behalf.

Can AI agents buy products from WooCommerce websites?

The infrastructure to enable AI agents to transact with ecommerce stores is now being developed. WooCommerce is actively working on agentic commerce and has introduced technology allowing authorised AI systems to interact with defined store functions. Some of this functionality remains in developer preview, so the precise capabilities available to individual stores will continue to evolve.

How can I make my WooCommerce store ready for AI shopping?

Start with your product information and underlying website. Product descriptions, prices, availability, variations and structured data should be accurate and machine-readable, while the website needs to be fast, accessible, secure and properly maintained. These improvements support AI product discovery now and provide the foundation for more advanced agentic commerce as it develops.

Do I need an agentic commerce plugin for WooCommerce?

Not necessarily, and we would be cautious about installing a new plugin simply because it promises to make a store “AI ready”. WooCommerce itself and major payment and AI providers are developing the underlying infrastructure. For most retailers, getting product data, structured data and the technical quality of the store right is currently the more important priority.
