2025 in review: An exceptional year for Castlegate

As we enter the New Year, it’s time to reflect on the projects, progress, and partnerships that defined 2025 at Castlegate.

First, a practical update: In October, after ten years on Walmgate, we moved into the Bonding Warehouse in Patch York. Please make a note of our new office address: The Bonding Warehouse, Terry Ave, York YO1 6FA. Administrative operations will run from Blake House, 18 Blake St, York YO1 8QG.

On the work front, 2025 has presented the Castlegate team with more ambitious, large-scale, international projects than any other year. We are no longer making simple brochure websites. We’re designing, building, and maintaining mission-critical business assets.

This shift in focus has transformed our business. The stakes are higher, the risks are greater, and the problems are less predictable. But the team has risen to every challenge, showing true passion for their work, embracing every learning curve, and operating consistently outside of their comfort zones.

A business consultant told us “Systemise the routine and humanise the exceptions”.  Sound advice. But the majority of the problems we now solve are exceptional. Here’s a roundup of the projects that have broken the mould – but not (quite) broken the team.

Delivering ROI on a £30 million plant fleet investment

Who we helped: Fairfax Plant Hire is an established provider of heavy plant machinery, trusted by customers nationwide for quality, safety, and excellent service.

The problem we solved: Following a £30 million investment in its fleet, Fairfax’s outdated website made it difficult for customers to find accurate specifications or see the range of machinery available. We designed and built a highly usable website featuring clear product categorisation, a bespoke plant-machinery finder, and strong trust signals throughout. The result is a platform that lets customers find information easily and positions Fairfax as the market leaders that they are.

What made it exceptional: Every product page includes downloadable specification sheets and operating manuals, serving both as a comprehensive brochure and a reputable industry resource. The ‘Add to my plant list’ feature allows users to submit shortlists directly for quotation, bringing in more enquiries and driving measurable returns on Fairfax’s fleet investment.

Expanding the influence of a global economics consultancy

Who we helped: York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) is a leading health economics consultancy, supporting clients across the pharmaceutical, medical technology, and public sectors.

The problem we solved: Despite its global reputation, YHEC’s previous website did not reflect its depth of expertise or international reach. Castlegate restructured the site to strengthen branding, reduce technical complexity, and improve performance. We streamlined their database of over 500 research publications to make it easier for specialists to locate relevant research. The result is a cleaner, faster, and more authoritative online presence.

What made it exceptional: We developed a bespoke WooCommerce integration that allows organisations to book multiple students onto YHEC’s training courses in a single transaction, improving the experience for clients and extending the influence of their education services.

Creating tailored customer journeys for affordable housing pioneers

Who we helped: Leeds Federated Housing Association was established in 1974 to provide safe, affordable housing, and today offers 5,000 homes to rent and buy across North Yorkshire.

The problem we solved: Leeds Federated’s previous website was poorly structured, which made it hard for customers to find information and time-consuming for Leeds Federated to maintain. We led an eight-week planning phase, collaborating with the site owners to define clear top-level information architecture and create distinct user journeys for tenants, buyers, and prospective residents. The new website enables faster access to information regardless of the user’s situation or starting point.

What made it exceptional: Leeds Federated serves two distinct customer groups with different expectations of the website. Current tenants need practical support, while prospective tenants and buyers want details about available housing. The new website balances the needs of both groups while delivering a consistent user experience.

Building a lasting foundation for an equitable research initiative

Who we helped: Valuing Voices is a University of York initiative funded by the Wellcome Trust which supports academic researchers to follow principles of equitable and sustainable project planning.

The problem we solved: Funders increasingly use Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) criteria to assess academic projects, but researchers lack practical frameworks for applying these in planning. We distilled Valuing Voices’ academic model into a bespoke online tool that guides teams through equity, risk, engagement, environmental sustainability, and reflection. The new platform enables equitable research and inclusive thinking, leading to stronger funding applications.

What made it exceptional: Valuing Voices was looking for a website partner to collaborate with over a multi-phase project. To support this approach, we configured reporting to track behaviours and collect feedback, enabling them to make data-informed decisions about the future of the project.

Advancing the market-disrupting mission of a challenger brand

Who we helped: Shifta is the UK’s fastest-growing secondhand bicycle marketplace, created to reform the process of buying bicycles online and bring affordable transport to local communities.

The problem we solved: Shifta needed a bicycle marketplace that could support rapid growth while remaining accessible to a broad audience. Castlegate built a versatile multi-vendor platform that lets customers search within multiple categories and filter by over 100 variables. We developed a distinctive visual identity that suits Shifta’s disruptive ambitions while also conveying credibility to traditional customers.

What made it exceptional: This was the first website we’ve delivered that incorporated gamification into an e-commerce platform. Customers earn points across the site and enter them into raffles to win prizes, driving engagement with the brand and generating additional revenue for the business.

Bespoke build for a local organisation with global impact

Who we helped: Global Amphibians is a Community Interest Company dedicated to protecting amphibians and their habitats through a combination of research, conservation, and education.

The problem we solved: When they came to us, Global Amphibians had no visual branding, no website, and limited opportunities for generating income to support their work. We crafted their brand identity from the ground up, and integrated it across a user-friendly website with in-built e-commerce functionality. The site highlights their educational activities to schools and partners, providing clear routes for enquiries and purchases.

What made it exceptional: This was a bespoke build for a newly established local company. The vibrant visual identity empowers Global Amphibians to communicate its mission with confidence while the online shop helps the organisation become more sustainable.

Looking ahead to 2026

This year has stretched and sharpened us at Castlegate. Solving out-of-the-box problems when there is no off-the-shelf solution has taken ingenuity, creativity, and humanity from the whole team. It has also reinforced what we value most: strategic collaboration, technical precision, and long-term partnerships. As our clients’ challenges continue to grow in complexity, our focus for 2026 is clear: delivering secure, high-performance, accessible websites to organisations that need a trusted website partner to help them achieve their goals.
